SUMMER 2012

  • On August  20,  Dr. Alex Mikulich was featured in Kerry Weber’s America Magazine blog Poverty, Unions, Race and the Bishops' Labor Day Statement. (http://americamagazine.org/blog/entry.cfm?blog_id=2&entry_id=5301)
  • On August 23, Dr. Sue Weishar and Fr. Fred Kammer worked with the Diocese of Jackson to prepare for legislative hearings on immigration legislation in Jackson, MS.
  • Fr. Fred Kammer's article on "The Medicaid Gap"  appeared in the September 10 issue of America Magazine. (http://www.americamagazine.org/content/article.cfm?article_id=13560&com…)
  • On September 10, Dr. Alex Mikulich spoke about predatory lending to a social work class at Louisiana State University.
  • On September 18, Fr. Fred Kammer presented on “Faithful Citizenship” as part of a September Speaker Series sponsored by Jesuit Young Adults & Professionals of New Orleans.
  • On September 22, Fr. Fred Kammer was a featured speaker at “Faith and Politics: Does it matter?” at St. Angela Merici Church in Houston, TX.
  • On September 26, JSRI sponsored a Biever Lecture at Loyola University by Fr. Bryan Massingale, Professor of Theology at Marquette University, on Election 2012 entitled “With Liberty & Justice for Some?: Race, Poverty, and Catholic Social Thought.” Panelists included Dr. Peter Burns, professor of political science at Loyola University and María Pabón López, Dean of the Loyola University College of Law.

FALL 2012

  • On October 6, Dr. Sue Weishar and Mary Baudouin hosted a Catholic Dialogue on Immigration at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Metairie. The dialogue was featured in an Oct. 20 article of the Clarian Herald (http://clarionherald.info/clarion/index.php/news/latest-news/155-breaki…).
  • On October 11-14 Dr. Alex Mikulich hosted a meeting of the Pax Christi Anti-Racism Team at Duchesne House in New Orleans.
  • On October 24 & 27, JSRI sponsored “Preventing Human Trafficking at the Super Bowl and Beyond: Mobilizing the New Orleans Community to Prevent and End Trafficking in our Midst,” a two-day conference that brought together numerous organizations in the New Orleans area to learn about human trafficking and work to prevent it leading up to the superbowl.   • JSRI’s fifth anniversary was featured in the Fall edition of LOYNO magazine "Hard Work for Faith that Does Justice: JSRI Turns Five."(http://magazine.loyno.edu/hard-work-faith-does-justice)
  • On November 9, Fr. Fred Kammer presented “Black, White, Brown, and Poor: Faithful Reflections on Post-Katrina New Orleans, Race, and Poverty” as part of Loyola Week sponsored by the Loyola University Office of Mission and Ministry.
  • On November 14, Fr. Fred Kammer presented his “Reflections on the Election” as part of a  webinar sponsored by the Loyola Institute for Ministry.
  • On November 17, Fr. Fred Kammer, SJ, spoke on immigration reform to over 1,200 students, faculty, and staff from Jesuit high schools and universities across the country at the Ignatian Family Teach-In in Washington D.C. sponsored by the Ignatian Solidarity Network.
  • On December 3, Dr. Alex Mikulich spoke about predatory lending to a social work class at Louisiana State University.
