Loyola at Rayburn
In 2022, JSRI led the effort to launch a prison education program at Loyola, beginning with credit-bearing courses offered to incarcerated students and staff at Rayburn Correctional Center in Angie, Louisiana. In June 2022, nearly 200 incarcerated men and 15 staff members applied to the program. After admissions, 20 incarcerated students and 14 correctional employees were accepted to Loyola University New Orleans. In Spring 2023, Loyola accepted 20 additional incarcerated students for a total of 40 incarcerated students.
The prison education program will strive to bring the full Loyola experience to the prison and integrate the students into our community, thereby contributing to Loyola University New Orleans’ mission to welcome students of diverse backgrounds and prepare them to lead meaningful lives with and for others; to pursue truth, wisdom, and virtue; and to work for a more just world.
