From examination of conscience to an examination of culture
While there has been extensive media coverage of the February 26, 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida from divergent racial and political perspectives, few, if any Catholics, have reflected publicly on the case. Fordham University theologian Maureen O'Connell invites Catholics to reflect on Catholic social teaching and race in a recent piece in the National Catholic Reporter. O'Connell further urges use of Ignatian spiritual resources to help Catholics imagine what it is like to walk in the shoes of a young African American male in the early 21st century United States.
